El congresista Adriano Espaillat expresó su agradecimiento al respaldo mostrado por Doug Emhoff, esposo de la vicepresidenta Kamala Harris, luego del ataque vandálico sufrido en su oficina de Washington Heights. El ataque, que ocurrió en la madrugada, fue calificado por el Departamento de Policía de Nueva York (NYPD) como un crimen de odio. Los atacantes utilizaron pintura roja para embadurnar las paredes y ventanas, rompieron los cristales con martillos y subieron al techo para cubrir con pintura el letrero que identificaba el espacio.

Preguntado si el ataque podría estar relacionado con grupos pro-palestinos, Espaillat confirmó su creencia de que sí. A pesar del incidente, el congresista dominicano reafirmó su postura contra el terrorismo y dejó claro que no cederá ante la intimidación: «Estoy firme en mis creencias en contra del terrorismo, y seguiré adelante sin temor», afirmó, refiriéndose también al contexto de la reciente escalada de violencia en Medio Oriente.

Doug Emhoff, conocido por su defensa activa contra el antisemitismo y la violencia, mostró su solidaridad con Espaillat, enviando un mensaje de apoyo tras el ataque. Este gesto fue profundamente apreciado por el congresista, quien agradeció públicamente a Emhoff por sus palabras: «La solidaridad de Doug es un recordatorio de que no estamos solos en esta lucha. Seguimos adelante, firmes y sin temor».

Espaillat también señaló que las autoridades, incluyendo la policía del Capitolio y el cuartel 34 de NYPD, están trabajando activamente en la investigación del incidente y han tomado medidas de seguridad adicionales. Hasta ahora, se desconoce la identidad de los perpetradores, pero las autoridades están utilizando videos de seguridad para avanzar en la investigación.

Además del respaldo de Emhoff, otros congresistas demócratas, como Jerrold Nadler, Hakeem Jeffries,  Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez entre otros, condenaron enérgicamente el ataque. En una declaración conjunta, subrayaron que aunque las protestas pacíficas son un derecho, los actos de vandalismo y violencia son inaceptables. «Este tipo de actos pone en peligro a los empleados y a los constituyentes, interrumpiendo los servicios sociales que son esenciales para nuestra comunidad», dijeron.

El ataque coincidió con el primer aniversario del ataque terrorista de Hamas en Israel, lo que ha provocado un aumento de la tensión y el temor en diversas comunidades, incluyendo el vecindario de Washington Heights. Sin embargo, tanto el apoyo de Emhoff como la resiliencia de Espaillat reflejan el compromiso continuo de combatir el odio y defender los valores democráticos.

El congresista concluyó reiterando su firmeza: «Este tipo de actos no nos van a intimidar. Seguiré defendiendo los derechos de mi comunidad, con la misma determinación de siempre».

Congressman Adriano Espaillat expressed his gratitude for the support shown by Doug Emhoff, husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, following the vandalism attack on his Washington Heights office. The attack, which took place in the early hours of the morning, was classified by the New York Police Department (NYPD) as a hate crime. The perpetrators used red paint to deface the walls and windows, shattered the front glass with hammers, and climbed onto the roof to cover the sign bearing the congressman’s image that identifies the community service space.

When asked if the attack might be linked to pro-Palestinian groups, Espaillat confirmed that he believed it could be. Despite the incident, the Dominican congressman reaffirmed his stance against terrorism, making it clear that he will not be intimidated: «I stand firm in my beliefs against terrorism, and I will continue forward without fear,» he stated, referring to the recent escalation of violence in the Middle East.

Doug Emhoff, known for his active stance against antisemitism and violence, expressed his solidarity with Espaillat, sending a message of support after the attack. This gesture was deeply appreciated by the congressman, who publicly thanked Emhoff for his words: «Doug’s solidarity is a reminder that we are not alone in this fight. We will continue forward, firm and fearless.»

Espaillat also noted that authorities, including Capitol Police and the NYPD’s 34th Precinct, are actively investigating the incident and have implemented additional security measures. The identity of the perpetrators remains unknown, but the authorities are using security footage to advance the investigation.

In addition to Emhoff’s support, other Democratic congressmembers, such as Jerrold Nadler, Hakeem Jeffries, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, strongly condemned the attack. In a joint statement, they emphasized that while peaceful protests are a right, acts of vandalism and violence are unacceptable. «These kinds of acts endanger employees and constituents, disrupting the social services that are essential to our community,» they stated.

The attack coincided with the first anniversary of the Hamas terrorist attack in Israel, which has heightened tensions and fear in various communities, including Washington Heights. However, both Emhoff’s support and Espaillat’s resilience reflect their ongoing commitment to fighting hate and defending democratic values.

The congressman concluded by reaffirming his resolve: «These types of acts will not intimidate us. I will continue to defend the rights of my community with the same determination as always.»
